Big changes are coming to Power BI licensing from April 1, 2025, and if you’re using Power BI Pro or Power BI Premium Per User (PPU), you’ll want to pay attention. Microsoft has announced price increases that will impact businesses of all sizes, and at Synapx, we’re here to help you navigate what this means for your team.
But don’t worry, this isn’t just a price hike for the sake of it. Microsoft has been hard at work enhancing Power BI, adding powerful new features, and integrating it deeper into Microsoft Fabric. So, while your bill may be going up, so is the value you’re getting. Let’s break it down.
What’s Changing?
From April 1, 2025, Power BI pricing will increase globally:
- Power BI Pro: Jumping from $10 to $14 per user/month (a 40% increase)
- Power BI Premium Per User (PPU): Rising from $20 to $24 per user/month (a 20% increase)
These changes apply to both new and existing customers at the time of their next renewal after April 1. If your licenses renew in May, for example, that’s when you’ll see the new pricing kick in.
Good news: If you’re on Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5, which includes Power BI Pro, you won’t be affected by these changes (at least for now).
Why Is Microsoft Doing This?
It’s been nine years since Power BI was launched, and in that time, Microsoft has rolled out over 1,500 updates (yes, you read that right). Here’s what’s been happening behind the scenes:
- AI-Powered Insights – With AI-driven data modeling, automated insights, and Copilot integrations, Power BI is getting smarter by the day.
- Better Visuals & Performance – Faster report loading times, improved visuals, and new storytelling features make dashboards more powerful.
- Seamless Fabric Integration – Power BI is now deeply embedded into Microsoft Fabric, meaning better data connectivity and a more unified analytics experience.
Microsoft is betting big on the future of data analytics, and these pricing adjustments are part of that investment.
What This Means for Synapx Clients
If you’re using Power BI, now is the time to review your licensing strategy. Here’s what you can do to stay ahead:
- Audit Your Licenses – Do all your users need Pro or PPU? Could some switch to free-tier access? Let’s optimise your setup.
- Consider Bundled Options – Microsoft 365 E5 includes Power BI Pro. If you’re on a lower-tier Microsoft 365 plan, an upgrade might save you money in the long run.
- Plan for Budget Adjustments – With a 40% jump in Pro pricing, budgeting for 2025 should factor in these new costs.
- Explore Microsoft Fabric – If you’re on Power BI Premium per capacity, consider whether Microsoft Fabric makes more sense for your business.
